Description
Grevy's Zebra; Equus grevyi
IUCN Red List Status: Endangered
Grevy's Zebra is restricted to Ethiopia and Kenya, and is most easily distinguished from the more common Plains Zebra by its narrower stripes. The species has declined by over 50 percent in recent decades, with only around 750 mature individuals now left in the wild. Hunting for skins in the 1970s may have contributed to its decline, but habitat loss through overgrazing, competition with livestock, and a reduced water supply are now the major threats. In some areas hunting continues to be a major threat, while disease outbreaks pose an additional hazard to the already reduced population.
Phew! My hand is cramping after this one! Three and a half hours of work with no breaks.
I was eager to get this done because today at work I found out that my manager's thirteen-year-old daughter is interested in art, and is already pretty good with shading in pencil. Then after finding out she was in love with zebras, I had to make this for her. I can't wait to give it to my manager when I go to work Friday. I hope her daughter likes it and keeps working on her own talents!
This is the twenty-third card of my "Endangered Animals ACEO Project." I will complete one card every day for the month of July, to raise awareness for animal species that are fighting to remain on this planet. You can read about my project here.
Also, this card is my entry for #Protect-Wildlife's "Endangered Animals" contest! Wish me luck!
